A series of workshops
were organized for fishers island-wide. The topics discussed were Safety at Sea,
Rules of the Road/Collision Avoidance Regulations [ColRegs] and Management for
Fish Aggregating Devices [FADs]. These workshops were held in four communities
with fishers from other communities island-wide benefiting from this training. Fishers
who participated will receive a package containing a compass/signal
flares/lifejacket.
Fishers were also given buying tips for
purchases of GPS receivers and VHF Marine radios.
Fishers
participated fully in the discussions and asked many questions and were given
information beyond the original scope of the training, for example, the
procedures and possible costs involved when a fishing vessel is reported lost
at sea.
